GREENSBORO, NC – To better prepare for threats to campus security, UNCG will conduct a full-scale training exercise with more than 100 participants 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, simulating a gunman on campus.
In addition to UNCG Police, the exercise will involve the Greensboro Police Department, Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, Greensboro Fire Department, Guilford County EMS, Guilford County Emergency Management, NC A&T Police and the American Red Cross.
Much of the campus will be closed the day of the exercise, which will occur during the university’s winter break. EnviroSafe Consulting of Graham will facilitate the training scenario, known as a “live exercise,” with role players simulating a campus shooting. Police and other participants will respond as if to an actual emergency.
UNCG began planning the upcoming exercise after an escaped inmate shot and killed a sheriff’s deputy and a security guard before being captured on the Virginia Tech campus in August 2006.
The university first developed an Emergency Operations Plan, a document identifying staff members as emergency responders and guiding their response to a crisis, in 1999. In the past several years, campus safety officials have conducted tabletop exercises in which they rehearsed their response to a flu pandemic, hurricane, tornados, train derailment and hazardous material spill.
UNCG is seeking volunteers, who may be required to undergo a criminal records check and sign a participation waiver. For more information, contact Major Jamie Herring of the UNCG Police at (336) 334-4281 or jcherring@uncg.edu.
