GREENSBORO, NC – It’s not easy being green, but it can lead to a bachelor’s degree.
In Fall 2007, UNCG will launch a new major in environmental studies.
“It’s part of thrust on campus to have a greater awareness of environmental responsibility and environmental issues,” said Dr. Susan Buck, who will direct the program.
The major is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences under Special Programs in Liberal Studies. Students must complete 122 hours of coursework, including 36 hours in the major.
Buck said the new major grew naturally out of an increased sustainability awareness on campus and has been well-supported by students and administrators. UNCG has had an environmental studies minor for years, but Buck was hearing from freshmen who wanted to design their own majors in environmental studies.
The field is growing, she said. Jobs in environmental studies range from environmental law to journalism to land conservation. Courses span the disciplines, including law, public policy, biology, chemistry, geography and English. Internships in the field will also be offered.
“I think the way we designed it is important, because it requires a breadth of knowledge in the sciences as well as the social sciences and humanities,” Buck said. “Students will come out with a set of skills so that they can do well in grad school or in the workforce.”
