GREENSBORO, N.C. – Topics ranging from 18th century Haitian slave insurrections to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina will be addressed as part of a series of lectures sponsored by the Department of History at UNCG.
The events, which are free and open to the public, are as follows:
• Thursday, March 1, 4 p.m."The Attica Uprising of 1971: Civil Rights Activism Behind Bars and its Legacy.” Dr. Heather Thompson, associate professor of history, UNC Charlotte. Room 1214, Moore Humanities and Research Administration Building.
• Tuesday, March 13, 7:30 p.m. “Prelude to Katrina: Poverty and Power in 1960s New Orleans.” Dr. Kent B. Germany, assistant professor of history and african american studies, University of South Carolina. Room 200, Science Building.
• Wednesday, March 28, 4 p.m. “Bread of Freedom: Martin Luther King Jr. and Economic Justice.” Dr. Thomas Jackson, associate professor of history, UNCG. Room 130, Moore Building.
• Monday, April 16, 4 p.m. “Facing Racial Revolution: First-Person Narratives of the Haitian Insurrection, 1791-1799. Dr. Jeremy Popkin, professor of history, University of Kentucky. Joyner Room, Elliott University Center.
