GREENSBORO, NC – Does Washington really want democracy in the Middle East? Dr. Marina Ottaway, director of the Middle East Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, will speak on that issue Feb.13 at UNCG.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Weatherspoon Art Museum Auditorium off Spring Garden Street. It is free and open to the public.

Ottaway specializes in democracy and post-conflict reconstruction issues, with special focus on the Middle East. She is a senior associate in the Democracy and Rule of Law Project, which analyzes the state of democracy around the world and the efforts by the United States and other countries to promote democracy.

She has taught at the University of Addis Ababa, the University of Zambia, the American University in Cairo and the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. Her most recent book, “Uncharted Journey: Democracy Promotion in the Middle East,” co-edited with Thomas Carothers, was published in January 2005.

Ottaway’s visit is the first in a three-part series this spring on “Democracy and Security in the Middle East.” The Center for Legislative Studies and the Department of Political Science are sponsoring the series, which is co-sponsored by the Kohler Fund, the Lloyd International Honors College, the International/Global Studies Program and the Political Awareness Club.
