GREENSBORO, N.C. – Films ranging from a “toxic comedy” about vinyl to an expose of genetically modified foods will be screened as part of a series of events encompassing a ‘Semester for Sustainability’ at UNCG.

Among the highlights of the semester-long series of events will be a lecture titled “The Role of Higher Education in Sustainability” given by Dr. Anthony Cortese, co-founder of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The lecture will take place on Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in Room 101 of the Science Building.

The semester, whose theme reflects the idea of preserving physical and human resources for future generations, is sponsored by the UNCG faculty senate, the governing body for UNCG’s faculty.

“Sustainability is about remaking the human presence in the natural world in a manner that will allow all current and future humans to be healthy,” said Dr. Anna Marshall-Baker, associate professor of interior architecture and chair of the faculty senate. “Sustainability is a concern that crosses all disciplines and all aspects of our professional and personal lives.”

The semester’s activities conclude with an Earth Day celebration Monday, April 16, to Friday, April 20. All events are open to the public at no charge.

Other activities include “2010 Global Imperative Teach-In,” an interactive web-based broadcast hosted by the New York Academy of Sciences. The event will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 20 from noon to 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Elliott University Center.

All films in the sustainability series begin at 6:30 p.m.
