GREENSBORO, NC-Provost A. Edward Uprichard was honored with the Joseph M. Bryan Bryan Foundation’s Unsung Hero Award last week, along with Lloyd V. Hackley, who is interim chancellor of N.C. A&T State University.

The honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the community, but whose good works are not widely recognized. Each award carried a $12,500 check to benefit the respective campuses, and Uprichard has designated his cash award to provide travel scholarships for students in the Lloyd International Honors College.

Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan and a crowd of well-wishers were on hand, including members of UNCG’s executive staff, deans council, staff and faculty senates, and staff from the Office of the Provost.

Uprichard announced plans in November to step down as Provost on June 30, and the search to find his successor are under way. He received his award from Ed Kitchen, the foundation’s vice president, who cited UNCG’s advances during the last decade, but who said that Uprichard ‘s “proclivity and passion for partnerships” deserved special mention.

“Ed is incredibly smart, but, more importantly, he is one of those very wise people who sees, respects and values the strengths that others bring to the table,” said Kitchen. “In that regard, his tireless and skilled efforts have been exemplary at partnering with NCA&T, the business community, and others to further the key role that higher education must play in our economy and quality of life.

“Ed has been, is, and I know will continue to be a champion for moving our community successfully into the knowledge-based economy.”

Chancellor Sullivan added, “ED Uprichard has worked closely with the talented UNCG faculty and staff to create exciting new academic programs, foster innovative research, connect the university to the community and enhance the quality of life for students. He has been an inspiring leader who works to bring out the best in the people he works with. He is a man of keen intelligence, impeccable integrity and dedication to his profession and UNCG. I am honored by having worked with Ed during my time at UNCG. He is the best Provost a Chancellor could have."
