GREENSBORO, NC – The Students First Campaign received gifts, pledges and commitments of $25.2 million in 2006, bringing to $71.7 million the total that has been raised for The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The record-setting year has the campaign approaching the three-quarters mark of its $100 million goal.

When the year-end results were tallied in January, the actual figure was at $71,676,943 – with cash gifts totaling $36.3 million; pledges, $9.3 million; and planned gifts, $26 million. The campaign’s major objectives are undergraduate and graduate scholarships and academic programs

“After entering the campaign’s public phase in the fall, this $71-plus million is a tremendous milestone for the campaign, and everyone – volunteers, friends, alumni, faculty and staff – can all be proud,” said Dr. Patricia W. Stewart, vice chancellor for university advancement. “Our progress is evidence that our supporters believe in the campaign’s imperatives.”

To date, donors have created:

• 8 new professorships
• 141 new undergraduate scholarships
• 18 new graduate scholarships
• 102 program endowments
• 7 new student awards programs.

“This figure represents gifts from alumni and friends of the university, and every gift moves the university along the way toward reaching our goal,” Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan said. “We have a great team leading the campaign and this progress speaks well of everyone’s efforts to tell UNCG’s story and to engage friends who will contribute the funds to secure its future.”

Chaired by Linda Arnold Carlisle, UNCG Class of 1972, and Norman and Sylvia Samet, all of Greensboro, the Students First Campaign is UNCG’s drive to increase available funds for undergraduate and graduate scholarships and to enhance academic program. Its $100 million goal calls for almost $70 million in scholarships. More information is available at the campaign website: donate.uncg.edu.
