GREENSBORO, NC – The Department of Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality Management, an accredited program for 25 years, has been reaccredited through 2011.

Dr. Nancy Gladwell, director of the department’s Recreation and Parks Management Program, spearheaded the reaccreditation process. The Council on Accreditation of the National Recreation and Park Association/American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation conducted an extensive review and granted the accreditation.

“The accreditation process is an excellent opportunity to conduct a thorough evaluation of our curriculum to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our students,” Gladwell said. “While I am delighted with the evaluation of our program, I’m not surprised – the faculty work diligently to maintain a comprehensive and current program of study.”

The Council on Accreditation specifically commended faculty for their commitment to teaching and research; the department for constantly updating the curriculum to best serve students; and the university for its commitment to long-range and strategic planning.

The Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department, with which the department has a longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship, has also been nationally accredited for a quarter century and had that accreditation renewed at the same meeting of the Council on Accreditation.

The city parks department has provided numerous internships to students and full-time jobs to graduates of the UNCG program. The city receives valuable service, while students are prepared for successful careers in the field.

The department, part of the School of Health and Human Performance, offers two undergraduate degree programs – one in recreation and parks management, the other in hospitality and tourism management – as well as five different concentrations.

Under the direction of Dr. Stuart J. Schleien, department head since 1997, the department also offers a master’s degree in parks and recreation management.
