GREENSBORO, NC - Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan has received the Thomas Z. Osborne Distinguished Citizenship Award, the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce’s highest honor, at the Greensboro Partnership annual dinner last Thursday.
The award is given to a citizen who has demonstrated extraordinary service and achievement within the community and is presented jointly by the Chamber and Duke Energy.
Tony Almeida of Duke Energy and Anne Osborne, widow of the late Thomas Osborne, made the presentation. The honor is named after Osborne, who was president of the chamber from 1984-91 and was a former Greensboro City Manager.
Sullivan was recognized for her distinguished leadership in higher education. She has served as UNCG’s chancellor since 1995 and is the senior chancellor for the 16-campus University of North Carolina system.
Under her leadership, enrollment reached an all-time high of over 16,600 students last fall and today leads the UNC system in minority enrollment, underscoring UNCG’s commitment to diversity. Funding has grown substantially to support research and community projects, along with unprecedented giving by the university’s friends and supporters.
During 2006, she chaired the task force on mathematics and science enrollments for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and currently serves on the advisory board of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars which administers the Fulbright Scholar Program.
A past recipient of the Women In Business award, she was also inducted to the Business Leaders Hall of Fame by the Central North Carolina Junior Achievement and has received the honorary Doctor of Pedagogy degree from St. John’s University.
