GREENSBORO, NC – The University of North Carolina at Greensboro now offers a doctorate in communication sciences and disorders. The UNC system Board of Governors approved the new degree program Friday, Jan. 12.

Courses will begin in the fall and will prepare students for careers in research and higher education. The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, part of the School of Health and Human Performance, plans to initially enroll four full-time and four part-time students.

“We are the first doctoral program in the southeast, and one of only a few in the nation, to offer a research doctoral program for both full- and part-time students,” said Dr. Celia Hooper, head of the department.

“We have a critical national shortage of faculty in CSD. Our new program will help address this need in creative ways.

“We appreciate the support we have received from other departments here at UNCG. Our students will benefit from the expertise of faculty across the campus.”

Students holding a master’s degree in speech-language pathology, audiology, speech science, hearing science, linguistics and other related fields may apply. CSD doctoral students will work with other doctoral students and faculty at UNCG and at research affiliates, including Duke University, Wake Forest University and N.C. A&T State University.

The CSD department has 11 full-time faculty, four adjunct faculty and clinical supervisory contracts with more than 50 Triad agencies. The department operates the UNCG Speech and Hearing Center, which includes the Tinnitus Clinic and has more than 60 community service contracts in Guilford County.

UNCG has special research programs which may be attractive to potential students, including genetics/genomics, special education, language and literacy, the arts, wellness, healthy aging, child development, neuroscience, and women’s health and wellness.

Communication sciences and disorders is UNCG's 23rd doctoral program. The UNC system now offers doctoral programs in CSD at three member universities: UNCG, East Carolina University and UNC-Chapel Hill.
