GREENSBORO, NC – Critically acclaimed writer and Lumberton-native Jill McCorkle will speak at the Friends of the UNCG Libraries annual dinner at 6 p.m. April 3 in Elliott University Center.
In her five novels and three story collections, McCorkle writes with humor and candor about the relationships and rivalries that bind people together – or drive them apart.
Her landscape is the small town of the New South, where residents crave change and grieve its cost. The New York Times Book Review has four times named her work to its Notable Books of the Year list.
McCorkle graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and worked in the Hollins College library while completing an MA in creative writing. Her first two novels – “The Cheer Leader” and “July 7th” – were published simultaneously by the fledgling Algonquin Books in 1984.
She taught at Harvard, Brandeis and Bennington College before recently joining the faculty of N.C. State’s new MFA program. “I’ve wanted to get back here for a long time,” she says. “It’s good to be home.”
Call the UNCG Box Office at (336) 334-4849 or visit its web site to reserve tickets. Prices are $35 for members, $45 for non-members, and $10 for the program only. Tickets are on sale now.
The event benefits the University Libraries.
