GREENSBORO, N.C. – “The Vagina Monologues,” Eve Ensler’s Obie Award-winning play, will be prerformed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10 at UNCG. A 2 p.m. matinee will be held on Saturday.
Performances will be held in the Elliott University Center auditorium. While admission is free, a donation of $5 is suggested with proceeds going to the Clara House, the battered women’s center in Greensboro.
“The Vagina Monologues” is a series of plays that grew out of interviews Ensler conducted with over 200 women. Now in its ninth year at UNCG, this year’s V-Day theme is “Reclaiming Peace.” To date, V-Day performances have raised more than $35 million for programs designed to end violence against women.
Sponsored by the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, this year’s event is being produced by Carole Lindsey-Potter and the WGS staff, and directed by WGS master’s student Alicia Sowisdral.
First performed in 1996 as an Off-Broadway play, “The Vagina Monologues” has become a world-wide event that benefits anti-violence groups in small communities in more than 112 countries. This year alone, over 2000 V-Day benefits will be held in over 950 communities and on college campuses.
