GREENSBORO, NC – UNCG is providing more than $290,000 in scholarships to 48 new freshmen for the 2007-08 academic year as part of the university's Merit Scholarship program.
All of the awards are renewable for three additional years of study. The Merit Awards Program recognizes and encourages exceptional academic ability and talent, and this year scholarships total approximately $1 million for all new and continuing recipients.
New scholarships are being created through the UNCG Students First Campaign, which is seeking to raise more than $68 million for scholarships as part of its $100 million goal.
This year’s merit scholars are:
The Ethel Virginia Butler Centennial Scholarship is valued annually at $10,500 for in-state students, with a total value of $42,000 over four years. This year’s Butler recipients are:
• Robert A. Freeman, 426 Valley Road, Sanford, Lee County High School.
• Connie J. Cann, 125 Mann Blvd., Newport, West Carteret High School.
• Jesse N. Morales, 10385 Rockfish Road, Raeford, Hoke County High School.
• Margaret E. Carpenter, 9207 Willowglen Trail, Charlotte, Providence Day School.
Katharine Smith Reynolds Scholarships have been awarded at UNCG since 1963. Each scholarship is valued at $8,000 annually, with a total value of $32,000. This year’s recipients are:
• Meleah A. Parrish, 605 Cross Pointe Lane, Garner, Raleigh Charter High School.
• Gina M. Hurley, 2511 Lake Forest Drive, Winston-Salem, Bishop McGuiness Catholic High School.
• Andrea J. Schronce, 2289, Ashwood St., Maiden, Maiden High School.
• Megan M. Singleton, 15 Forge Drive, 15 Forge Drive, Mills River, West Henderson High School.
• Felicia F. Shelton, 2195 Asbury Road, Westfield, North Stokes High School.
• Adrienne S. Deaton, 4811 Alliance Church Road, Pleasant Garden, Southeast Guilford High School.
The L. Richardson and Emily Preyer Scholarship, established in 1991, was named for a Greensboro couple who were known for their extensive public service. Each scholarship is valued at $3,000 annually, with a total value of $12,000.
This year’s recipient is:
• Andrew Z. Greeson, 1603 Scalesville Road, Summerfield, Northwest Guilford High School.
The Bryan Scholarships were created in 1983 by the Greensboro couple when they established the Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Endowment Fund to provide assistance for undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Business and Economics at UNCG. In 1987, the UNCG Board of Trustees named the school in his honor.
Bryan Scholarships range in value from $6,000 to $7,000 annually with a total value of $24,000 to $28,000. The students will study in the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics. Recipients this year are:
• Hilal J. Chami, 1500 Allenbrook Drive, Charlotte, Harding University High School.
• Stephen C. Pritchard, 504 Biggerstaff Road, Spruce Pine, Mitchell High School.
• Nelson B. Stanaland, 2106 Rockglen Lane, Greensboro, Grimsley High School.
• Adam P. Clayton, 25 Jessica Lane, Roxboro, Person High School.
• Heather L. Thornbrough, 81 Whit Court, Angier, Wake Christian Academy.
• Zhipeng Liu, 1819-B Sherwood Street, Greensboro, Grimsley High School.
• Carolyn E. Boyd, 2379 Oak Trail Drive, Germantown, Tenn., Houston High School.
• Laila M. Yette, 15108 Snow Mass Court, Silver Sping, Md., James H. Blake High School.
The Beverly Cooper Moore Scholarship is named for the late Beverly Moore. Moore served as the first chair of UNCG’s Board of Trustees and the new humanities building at UNCG is named for him.
The Moore scholarship is valued at $3,000 annually, with a total value of $12,000. This year’s recipient is:
• Kristin J. Yakamavich, 8509 Bannister Court, Raleigh, Millbrook High School.
The Marion White Fisher Centennial Scholarship was made possible by a bequest of Freida White McGirt in memory of her daughter, Dr. Marion White Fisher, Class of 1939. The scholarship is valued at $6,000 annually, with a total of $24,000.
This year’s recipient is:
• Heather N. Sit, 3312 Perkins Ridge Road, Raleigh, William G. Enloe High School.
The Marguerite Felton and Guita Marble Scholarship in Chemistry is valued at $6,000 annually, with a total value of $24,000. This year’s recipient is:
• Adam W. Arrico, 4401 Old Pageland Monroe Road, Monroe, Forest Hills High School.
The Jefferson-Pilot Scholarship was established in 1983 by the former Jefferson-Pilot Corporation, which is now Lincoln Financial Inc. Each scholarship is valued at $5,000 annually and has a total value of $20,000.
This year’s recipient is:
• Michael B. Dwinell, 39 New Valley Road, Swannanoa, N.C. School of the Arts.
Bank of America Scholarships are valued at $7,000-$8,000 annually, with a total value of $28,000-$32,000. This year’s recipients are:
• Miranda L. Taylor, 5329 Ballentine St., Hope Mills, South View High School.
• Savannah R. Clark, Rt. 1 Box 22, Mt. Carmel, McCormick High School.
The May Donoho Scholarships are valued at $3,000 annually, with a total value of $12,000. This year’s recipients are:
• Rebecca I. Whiteside, 2849 Chris Cole Road, Sanford, Southern Lee High School.
• Katelyn E. Whiteside, 2849 Chris Cole Road, Sanford, Southern Lee High School.
The Harry B. and Edith V. Sloan Scholarship was created through a bequest from the late Edith V. Sloan of Greensboro, who was a lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences from 1966-83 and who also was an alumna of UNCG. The scholarship also bears the name of her late husband, Harry B. Sloan
The award was endowed in 1997 for students interested in pursuing study in healh, the sciences or the mathematical sciences. The scholarship is valued at $2,500 annually, with a total value of $10,000.
This year’s recipient is:
• Lindsay N. Dupell, 1312 Linview Drive, Kernersville, East Forsyth High School.
The Corinne Sussman Segal Scholarship is valued at $5,000 annually, with a total value of $20,000. The award given for study in the School of Education.
This year’s recipient is:
• Elizabeth S. Marvin, 5610 Earl Road, Durham, Northern High School.
The Susan Morris Safran Scholarship is valued at $5,000 annually, with a total value of $20,000. It is awarded to a nursing student.
This year’s recipient is:
• Nicholas R. Cranston, 370 Womble Road, Sanford, Lee County High School.
The Dorothy Dillon Raymer and Augustus Barker Raymer Memorial Scholarship is valued at $5,000 annually, with a total value of $20,000. This year’s recipient is:
• Sarah B. Reitz, 6 Silver Oak Court, Greensboro, Page High School.
The Ruth Butler Bailey Class of 1942 Scholarship is valued at $5,000 annually, with a total value of $20,000. It is awarded for study in the School of Human Environmental Science.
This year’s recipient is:
• Katie P. Chapman, 1215 Cedar Creek Drive, Cary, Cary Christian School.
The Martha Fowler McNair Scholarship is valued at $5,000 annually, with a total value of $20,000.
• Jayme D. Mallindine, 1101 Fisher Branch Road, Marshall, Madison High School.
The Barbara C. Carter and Hal B. Phillips Jr. Scholarship is valued at $5,000 annually, with a total of $20,000. It is awarded to students majoring in mathematics or related fields, the physical and biological sciences or other science-related majors offered by the College of Arts & Sciences. Preference is given to students who intend to teach at the secondary school level.
This year’s recipient is:
• Elizabeth V. Julian, 3510 Cardinal Ridge Drive, Greensboro, Northwest Guilford High School.
The Board of Visitors Chancellor’s Scholarship is valued at $6,000 annually, with a total value of $24,000. The Board of Visitors is an advocacy organization comprised of alumni, business and community leaders. The board created the endowment fund to address the need for undergraduate scholarships.
This year’s recipient is:
• Sarah C. Griffin, 209 Highland Ave., Cary, Green Hope High School.
The Alumni Awards are valued at $4,000 annually, with a total value of $16,000. The scholarships are funded by contributions from alumni and friends of the university.
This year’s recipients are:
• Chance J. Sutton, 353 E. Haywood Street, Wendell, William G. Enloe High School.
• Lesley N. Maple, 7106 North River Road, Oak Ridge, Northwest Guilford High School.
• Caleb B. Brown, 6944 Union Grove Church Road, Seagrove, Southwestern Randolph High School.
• Elizabeth A. Jennings, 4508 Brondesbury Dr., Winston-Salem, Robert B. Glenn High School.
The 50th Class Reunion Scholarship was started in 1986 by the UNCG Class of 1936. Each scholarship is valued at $5,000 annually, with a total value of $20,000.
This year’s recipient is:
• Sarah E. Fulcher, 378 Valley View Drive, New Holland, Pa., Lancaster Catholic High School.
The Class of 1942 Centennial Scholarship is valued at $6,000 annually, with a total value of $24,000. Funds for this scholarship were established by members of the Class of 1942 in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of their commencement and UNCG’s centennial year.
This year’s recipient is:
• Susan M. Pryor, 50 Triple Oaks Drive, Hendersonville, North Henderson High School.
The Class of 1945 Centennial Scholarship is valued at $2,500 annually, with a total value of $10,000. The scholarship was established in 1995 by the Class of 1945 to assist female students who have an interest in human relations, international studies or women’s studies.
This year’s recipient is:
• Erin M. Briley, 303 Promontory Point Drive, Cary, Green Hope High School.
The Woman’s College Class of 1951 Scholarships are valued at $3,000 annually, with a total value of $12,000.The award was launched as a reunion gift of the Class of 1951.
This year’s recipients are:
• Leigha D. Dennis, 3605 Shadow Ridge Drive, High Point, Southwest Guilford High School.
• Robert S. Davis IV, 2590 Harper Road, Clemmons, West Forsyth High School.
The Class of 1955 Scholarship is valued at $5,000 annually, with a total value of $20,000. The award was made available through gifts from the class of 1955.
This year’s recipient is:
• Christopher R. DiMassimo, 12304 Peed Road, Raleigh, Millbrook High School.
The Class of 1970 Scholarship was created by the Class of 1970 in celebration of their 25th anniversary. It is valued at $3,000 annually, with a total value of $12,000.
This year’s recipient is:
• Jonathan D. Schwartz, 7306 Crescent Ridge Drive, Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill High School.
