SERVE Center at UNCG has become the latest and largest tenant at the North Campus of Gateway University Research Park.

The research park, a partnership between UNCG and NC A&T State, recently hosted a ribbon-cutting and dedication for the newly renovated Dixon Building, where SERVE is the primary tenant. SERVE conducts research and publishes the results to improve education, from pre-kindergarten through high school, in the Southeast.

SERVE has received more than $175 million in sponsored research awards since its inception in 1990. Last year it won a five-year, $37.7 million federal contract – the largest grant or contract in the university’s history.

“Moving into the Dixon Building at Gateway University Research Park ushers SERVE Center into a new era with unlimited possibilities for growth and expansion,” said SERVE Executive Director Dr. Ludwig David van Broekhuizen. “The professional setting and state-of-the-art facility reflect SERVE’s great contributions to UNCG’s research efforts.”

One of the nation’s 10 regional educational laboratories, SERVE provides the best available research and information to local and state educators and policymakers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina. Its in-depth studies on issues such as early college high schools, teacher quality and vocabulary development in kindergarten have the potential to transform education not only within the region, but throughout the country.

In addition to van Broekhuizen, speakers at the ribbon-cutting included UNCG Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan, NC A&T Chancellor Stanley Battle, State Superintendent June St. Clair Atkinson, UNCG Provost Emeritus Edward Uprichard and Gateway University Research Park Executive Director John Merrill.

Gateway University Research Park is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit entity created to manage and operate the UNCG and NC A&T collaboration for research and economic development in the Triad. Gateway University Research Park will attract and retain educational, corporate and community service agencies which advance scientific and educational research.
