Marianne Hayek
GREENSBORO, NC – Marianne Hayek, an economist at the Bryan School of Business and Economics has been named director of the BB&T Program on Capitalsim, Markets and Morality there.
The program, which was funded by a $1 million gift from the BB&T Charitable Foundation, was established to promote the study, discussion and debate about the role of capitalism and its moral implications.
One undergraduate and one graduate course related to the moral and ethical foundations of capitalism will be taught each semester.
“The word capitalism has been misunderstood,” said Hayek. “There is the notion that capitalism is something evil. The goal of the program is to be a forum for ideas.”
The program will offer students from disciplines across the campus the opportunity to examine the ethical and philosophical basis for free market economies, as well as to broaden their knowledge of economics as a multi-faceted discipline.
A lecture series focusing on ethical and core values in business will be held under the aegis of the program. Dr. Bruce Caldwell, Joe Rosenthal Excellence Professor in Economics at UNCG, will be among the presenters.
Hayek is an economics instructor at the Bryan School where she teaches Law and Economics, Public Finance, Introductory Economics and Principles of Macroeconomics. She holds an MA in Economics from the University of California, Davis. Her areas of expertise include public finance, industrial organization, microeconomics and game theory.
