GREENSBORO, NCUNCG Theatre presents “Holy Ghosts,” Romulus Linney’s heart-wrenching drama about faith and belonging March 28-31 and April 24 and 27.

“Ghosts,” staged at Taylor Theatre, is tinged with a few comic elements — and a surprising revelation that won’t be let out of the box.

Linney, father of film actress Laura Linney, is a prolific and acclaimed playwright who is revered by the theater community, said Christine Morris, the drama professor who is directing the show and who has worked closely with Linney.

“He’s a tremendous treasure of American Theater in his own right,” Morris said. “I’ve loved this play for years, and I feel like we have the talent pool to do it.”

The play centers on Coleman Shedman who tracks his runaway wife, Nancy, to the rural meeting house of a Southern Pentecostal sect with a lawyer in tow. But Nancy is unwilling to forsake the love and protection of her new “husband,” the Reverend Obediah Buckhorn, and return to the brutal, hard-drinking Coleman. When the strapping Rev. Buckhorn himself arrives, it is quickly evident that Coleman will not be able to take her back by force.

“It’s really about finding your home — finding your family, finding your community,” Morris said. “Romulus says all plays are family stories.”

Audiences will also be treated to a soundtrack, which Morris describes as “live Pentecostal rockabilly.”

Key cast members are Erica Honeycutt as Nancy Shedman, Bradley Brown as Coleman Shedman, Zac Campbell as Obediah Buckhorn, Sr. and Jesse Presler as Obediah Buckhorn, Jr.

Scene designer is Matthew Duvall, costume designer is Kate Welsh and lighting designer is Matt Abdelnour.

Performances begin at 7 p.m. March 28 and 29; 8 p.m. March 30 and 31; 7 p.m. April 24 and 8 p.m. April 27. April 24 is the sign interpretation date.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $8 for UNCG Alumni Association members and groups of 10 or more and $7 for UNCG Students.
