GREENSBORO, N.C. – Dr. Frances Alexander Campbell, an expert in child development, and Dr. Jay Mancini, professor of Human Development at Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University, will receive the 2007 Alumni Distinguished Service Awards from UNCG.

The awards, which are given annually to alumni who have made significant contributions to the liberal arts ideal in service to the community, society or UNCG, will be presented on Saturday, April 14, during the annual meeting of the UNCG Alumni Association.

Campbell graduated from Woman’s College (now UNCG) in 1955, and received a PhD in psychology from UNC Chapel Hill in 1963. She is a senior scientist and has been a central member of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at UNC-CH for over 30 years. Her key assignment is the measurement component of the Abecedarian Project, one of the longest-running longitudinal studies in the world. The project stresses early intervention for infants and toddlers at-risk for school failure.

Campbell was a member of the White House Conference on Early Literacy and was part of the Pritzker Consortium on Early Childhood. The results of her work have been widely published in numerous studies and throughout professional literature. She has contributed to the Alumni Scholars Endowment.

Mancini received his PhD in 1977 from the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at UNCG. He is director of the Family and Community Research Project and an extension specialist in family services and human development at Virginia Tech.

His research in three decades has included studies of family gerontology, sustainability of community-based programs and the relationship between families and communities. Mancini has received numerous awards such as the UNCG School of Human Environmental Science’s Distinguished Alumni Award, a National 4-H National Technology Curriculum Award and a Recognition of Service Certificate from the National Council on Family Relations where he serves as a Fellow.
