GREENSBORO, N.C. – “The Ballad of Baby Doe,” composer Douglas Moore’s tale of love, betrayal and politics set against the rough and tumble landscape of a 19th century American mining town, is to be presented March 29-30, and Sunday, April 1, by The Opera Theatre at UNCG.
The UNCG Opera Theatre production is being jointly held with the UNCG School of Music, the UNCG Theatre and the Greensboro College Department of Music.
Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday, March 29 and 30, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, at the Gail Brower Huggins Performance Center on the campus of Greensboro College.
“'The Ballad of Baby Doe' is considered by many to be one of the greatest American operas ever written,” said Dr. David Holley, professor of opera and director of the Opera Theatre. “'Baby Doe' is written in English, has beautiful music and is accessible to all.”
The opera recounts the true story of Elizabeth “Baby Doe” Tabor and her scandalous love affair with silver mining tycoon Horace Tabor, who single-handedly built the town of Leadville, Colorado, including its world-renowned opera house. Regarded as the Donald Trump of his time, Tabor eventually loses his vast fortune when the silver market collapses, while Baby Doe remains loyal to him until the end.
The opera, which premiered in 1956, draws on folk themes, hymns, old waltzes and other American musical genres.
Tickets are $15 adults, $12 seniors, $6 students, and are available at the UNCG Box Office, (336) 334-4849, or at http://boxoffice.uncg.edu.
