GREENSBORO, NC – The UNCG Police Department is continuing its investigation of a shooting that occurred in Weil Residence Hall on Saturday, March 24. The victim, UNCG freshman Stephen Cobb of Raleigh, remained in Moses Cone Memorial Hospital on Monday.

UNCG Police have charged Brian Patrick Martin, 19, of Greensboro, in the shooting. Charges filed against Martin are attempted first degree murder, attempted robbery with a firearm, possession of a weapon on campus, and discharge of a weapon on campus.

Martin is not a UNCG student. A second suspect has been released. A third person who could possibly be involved in the incident is currently being sought.

Counselors from the UNCG Counseling and Testing Center were on campus until 10 p.m. Saturday night in the Housing and Residence Life Office. Sunday they were on campus from 3 to 8 p.m. at Weil Residence Hall.

Students can also come by the Counseling Center during normal business hours this week. Counselors will also meet with students as a group, if needed, each day next week from noon to 1 p.m. in the Counseling Center.

Dr. Carol Disque, vice chancellor for student affairs, said of the shooting:

“The university takes the security of its students very seriously. Saturday’s shooting was an aberration in our campus life. University police veteran Maj. Jamie Herring confirms we have not had a shooting in a residence hall in recent memory, going back 25 to 30 years.

“Since the shooting, the university has taken steps to reinforce the safety of its students. All students who live on campus have been notified about the shooting Saturday, and told to take extra security precautions.

"Patrols are being stepped up in the residence halls area, and at this time, we do not feel there is any additional threat to the campus from this incident.

“The police department is continuing an aggressive investigation of the event. Because this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment on that other than to say we are cooperating fully with our university police force.

“The injured student was recovering in the hospital on Sunday, and we extend our wishes for a full recovery to him and his family.

“The University has a no-tolerance policy for firearms, both on our campus and in our residence halls. We pursue any complaints that are related to this, and whenever there is a suspicion of this kind of activity, we take action, both through university police and through the student disciplinary policy.”
