GREENSBORO, N.C. – “Tribute to Miles Davis,” a CD recorded by the UNCG Jazz Ensemble, has earned its third consecutive Blue Chip Jazz CD award in the Campus CD division from the Jazz Education Journal.

“Tribute to Miles Davis” contains compositions by Miles Davis arranged and performed by students in the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program, which is housed in the School of Music. The CD was recorded live during a tribute to Miles Davis held at UNCG in 2006.

“For me, this is special because it not only highlights the creative performance of our students, but also because these recordings demonstrate their creativity in composition, arranging and orchestration,” said Steve Haines, associate professor at the School of Music and director of the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program.

Students performing on the CD were: Brandon Tesh, alto saxophone; Paul Fisher, baritone saxophone; Lynn Grissett, trumpet; Mark Shoun, trombone; J.P. Smith, guitar; Gray Hackelman, bass; and Jon Marc Dale, drums.

The Blue Chip award is among several distinctions for the UNCG Jazz Ensemble this year. During the spring, the ensemble played with long-time Bruce Springsteen drummer Max Weinberg. It also appeared with legendary jazz guitarist John Scofield.

The UNCG Jazz Ensemble is the flagship of the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program. Comprised of undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in making jazz a major part of their musical training, the ensemble has been featured in concerts throughout the U.S. and on radio and television.
