GREENSBORO, N.C. – Dr. David Lefkowitz, an assistant professor of philosophy who studies ethics and international affairs and the philosophy of law, has been awarded a $5,000 summer stipend by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Lefkowitz will use the stipend to further his research on states’ moral duty to obey international law and investigating the ethical implications of wartime collateral damage.

“Ideally, I want my work on morality, law, and war to make both a practical contribution to public debate and a theoretical contribution to philosophy and the humanities,” Lefkowitz said. “I am delighted that the NEH thinks that I have been successful enough in pursuit of this goal to fund my research this summer.”

Lefkowitz, who received a PhD in philosophy from the University of Maryland, has participated in two prior NEH summer seminars. In 2004, he took part in a seminar on war and morality at the United States Naval Academy and in 2005 participated in a seminar on the moral significance of law at Georgia State University.

The NEH established the summer stipend award in 1967. Eleven UNCG faculty members have received summer stipend awards.
