GREENSBORO, NC-- Robert Olmstead will read from his latest novel, “Coal Black Horse,” Thursday, Nov. 29, at UNCG.
The reading, hosted by the MFA Writing Program and Spring Garden Press, begins at 8 p.m. in the Faculty Center on College Avenue. It is free and open to the public; a reception and booksigning will follow.
“Coal Black Horse” is the stark story of a young boy sent by his mother to his bring father home from the Civil War. When his horse goes lame, a blacksmith lends the boy a huge black horse to help him complete his quest. Olmstead has written several other novels including “America by Land,” “A Trail of Heart’s Blood Wherever We Go” and “Soft Water.” He has also written a memoir, “Stay Here with Me,” as well as “River Dogs,” a collection of short stories, and the textbook “Elements of the Writing Craft.”
His work has appeared in numerous journals, magazines, and anthologies including The Greensboro Review, the Vintage Book of the Contemporary American Short Story and the New York Times Book Review.
Among his honors Olmstead has won an Idaho Press Club Award, a National Endowment for the Arts fiction fellowship and a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship. He is currently the director of creative writing at Ohio Wesleyan University.
