GREENSBORO, NC-- Buried beneath the thick frost, or rime, of a long-dead mining community lies the cold heart of small-town hypocrisy.
That’s the premise of UNCG Theatre’s latest production, “The Rimers of Eldritch,” which runs Oct. 18-21 at Taylor Theatre. Lanford Wilson wrote the play in 1965, but director Michael Flannery, who teaches theatre at UNCG, considers it timeless.
“It deals with such universal themes,” he said. “It’s a commentary about people who speak one way and behave another. The play peels away the rime little by little.”
Flannery describes “Rimers” as a non-chronological, at times poetic, murder mystery that challenges audiences. “You have all the pieces of the puzzle almost from the beginning, but it’s not until the end that we figure out how to put the pieces together.”
Eldritch is a fictional town somewhere in the Midwest that “time has passed by,” Flannery said. Specific locations in the town are suggested by lighting or dialogue. Little to no scenery and props are used.
“It’s bare bones, and that’s the way it’s meant to be.”
Show times and dates are: Oct. 18, 7 p.m.; Oct.19 and 20, 8 p.m.; and Oct. 21, 2 p.m.
