GREENSBORO, NC – Dr. Mary H. Tabacchi, an associate professor at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, will deliver the annual Ethel Martus Lawther Lecture.

Her lecture, “Wellness at the Crossroads,” will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in Elliott University Center Auditorium. The School of Health and Human Performance and Lloyd International Honors College are sponsoring the event.

She will speak about wellness and health care choices. On one path we become responsible for ourselves and determine how much health care we want and need. On the other path we allow the health care system to care for us. The costs of each path will be considered.

“We can stress the system, making it more expensive than ever as we become less vital and fit,” Tabacchi says. “Or we can help the system become less expensive by improving lifestyle habits and taking control. Which path will we take?”

A registered dietician, Tabacchi began teaching at Cornell in 1972 as a visiting assistant professor in the division of nutritional sciences. She earned her PhD is in biochemical nutrition and biostatistics at Purdue University.

She is a well respected author and researcher, having published numerous papers and books on nutrition, spa management and other related subjects, as well as extensive research on the spa industry.

She has worked on research, education and consulting projects in Europe, Asia and North America, and served on the International SPA Association Board of Directors and numerous spa and spa-related advisory boards and committees. She is the past president of the ISPA Foundation.

The Lawther Lecture remembers Ethel Martus Lawther, the first dean of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, now HHP. She served in this capacity from 1947 to 1971. During her tenure, she helped expand the scope of the department, which eventually became a school unto itself.

Paid parking for this event is available in the Walker Street deck across from EUC.
