GREENSBORO, N.C. – Six seminars aimed at teaching the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and addressing the impact of race, gender and ethnicity on entrepreneurship and small businesses will be presented by the Bryan School of Business and Economics in conjunction with the College of Arts and Sciences at UNCG.

The seminars will take place on the campus of UNCG on consecutive Wednesdays, Sept. 19, 26, Oct. 3, 17, 24 and 31. All sessions will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and are open to the public at no charge.

Titled the BELL Forums (Building Entrepreneurial Learning for Life), each seminar will focus on a different aspect of entrepreneurship, from understanding start up costs, to everyday challenges faced in establishing and operating a small business.

“In today’s ever-diverse and changing business climate, the merging of cultures and demographics play a key role in the success of any business person,” said Dr. James K. Weeks, dean of the Bryan School. “Therefore, we plan to look closer at how race, gender and ethnicity can support entrepreneurial endeavors.”

The BELL Forums are part of a university-wide initiative to expose students to the world of starting and operating businesses in fields from the arts to technology. By integrating elements of entrepreneurship into diverse academic disciplines, BELL will create an atmosphere that will benefit students as they face the economic challenges of the 21st century. BELL will contribute to UNCG’s Economic Development Initiative by providing creative and forward-looking graduates who are prepared for work environments that are increasingly interdisciplinary and supportive of individual initiative.

Seminars will consist of a moderator, guest panelists and a question and answer period. UNCG faculty and students as well as those community members interested in the subject matter are invited to attend. Visit http://www.uncg.edu/rsh/entrepreneur to register.

Seminars include:
• Sept. 19: Understanding and addressing cross-cultural issues facing race, gender and ethnicities in establishing and managing an enterprise. Kirkland Room, EUC.

• Sept. 26: Issues faced in starting and growing enterprises and the resources available for entrepreneurs and small business owners. EUC auditorium.

• Oct. 3: Arts Entrepreneurship in the age of diversity. Discussion to be led by Dr. John Lee Jellicorse, director of the UNCG program in entrepreneurship in the arts. Guest panelist will be Wanda Urbanska, host of the TV show “Simple Living with Wanda Urbanska.” Room 103, Moore Building.

• Oct. 17: Social and corporate entrepreneurship. How to achieve social and environmental goals for the common good as well as addressing the opportunities of entrepreneurship in corporate environments. Maple Room, EUC.

• Oct. 24: Dilemmas and debates for first-time entrepreneurs. Panel members will discuss the challenges faced by new entrepreneurs and how to meet them. Alexander Room, EUC.

• Oct. 31: Celebrating UNCG student entrepreneurs. Guest panelists will include Chris Lester ’94, partner in Caneca, Inc., which owns Natty Greene’s Brewery in Greensboro; and Chris Swinton ’02, 06 MBA, and Craig Stokes ’06 MBA, co-owners of Mylipps.com. EUC auditorium.

Beginning this fall, the Bryan School is offering seven new courses in entrepreneurship. The school also hosts a chapter of CEO, the Collegiate Entrepreneur’s Organization. On Tuesday, Feb. 26, UNCG will be a major sponsor of a state-wide entrepreneurial summit at the Greensboro Coliseum.
