GREENSBORO, N.C. – Everyone knows that the Nile is the world’s longest river. But how many people can list at least three greenhouse gases, can name the country that has the largest number of Shia Muslims or who know the overall shape of a Mollweide map projection? *

Knowing the answers to these and scores of other geography-related questions will be the key to capturing top honors during the North Carolina World Geography Bowl competition to be held on Friday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m. in Room 129 of the Graham Building.

The competition, sponsored by the UNCG geography department and the Association of American Geographers, will pit teams from six North Carolina universities against each other to test their knowledge of physical, economic and cultural geography.

Each team is outfitted with buzzers that are used to answer questions in a quiz bowl format. Participation is open to any full-time UNCG student.

“Geography is one of the most diverse and exciting disciplines. Geographers investigate everything from global warming to the impact of the rapid growth of North Carolina’s Hispanic population on social and economic resources,” said Dr. Jay Lennartson, assistant professor of geography and coordinator of the Bowl for the past four years.

The highest scoring players will advance to the regional championships in Charleston, S.C. in November.

For more information contact the UNCG Department of Geography at (336) 334-5388 or visit www.uncg.edu/geo.

*Answers: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide; Iran; oval.
