GREENSBORO, NC – Studies suggest that lifelong physical activity may reduce women’s risk of breast cancer by as much as 40 percent, according to Donna Duffy, a visiting lecturer in UNCG’s Department of Exercise and Sport Science. Nevertheless, many young women become less active after they graduate from high school.

In an effort to encourage girls to stay active throughout their lives, the UNCG Center for Women’s Health & Wellness is collaborating with Greensboro Day School to sponsor the Second Annual JV Field Hockey Tournament for Adolescent Breast Health.

This event, which includes eight teams from high schools around North Carolina, will help the athletes better understand breast health and the facts about breast cancer and physical activity. Stacey Gregg from the Raleigh-based Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education, who coordinates the Poe Center’s Better Start Early Program, will offer a program on adolescent breast health and physical activity to the athletes, their parents and coaches.

The Second Annual Center for Women’s Health and Wellness JV Field Hockey Tournament will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5 and 6, at Greensboro Day School. Proceeds from the tournament will be used to provide scholarships for girls wanting to join the Greensboro Youth Field Hockey League.

Games will be played at 5 and 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Breakfast will be at 8:15 a.m. Saturday and will be followed by the health education program. Saturday’s games will be at 9:30 and 11 a.m., and at 1 p.m. The championship game will start at 2:30 p.m.

Donations to support the tournament have been provided by numerous Greensboro businesses including Murphy-Wainer Orthopedic Specialists, Harris Teeter, Brueggers Bagels, Clara Marie’s Authentic Southern Bakery, Robust-a Coffee, and Jersey Mike’s Subs.

The Center for Women’s Health and Wellness at UNCG seeks to advance the health and wellness of all girls and women through collaborative research and educational programs. The center promotes safe, healthy and meaningful lives for girls and women of all ages, backgrounds and communities.
