Get Your ‘Passport’ Stamped Sept. 22

GREENSBORO, NC – Passport Dance/Art Gathering, produced by UNCG Department of Dance faculty members Eluza Santos and Robin Gee, will bring together artists for a multi-media, multi-cultural event Saturday, Sept. 22.

The activities – dance, music, visual art and foods from a variety of cultures – will start at 4 p.m. in and around the UNCG Dance Theater in the Health and Human Performance Building at the corner of Walker Avenue and Kenilworth Street. The afternoon portion of the program, free and open to the public, will include Mexican visual art, African music, demonstrations of capoeria and yoga, and food from Pakistan and Brazil.

A ticketed dance concert at 8 p.m. in the Dance Theater will feature Korean, Latin, African and Middle Eastern dances and will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Tickets – $6 for UNCG students with valid ID, $9 for other students and seniors, and $12 for general admission – are available through the UNCG Box Office, (336) 334-4849.

Santos, a native of Brazil, founded and directed Passport Dance Gathering in 2003. She is a co-founder of the Latina Dance Project, a performance-based company exploring the Latina aesthetic in concert, scholarship, and research. Her research focuses on the origins of contemporary Brazilian concert dance styles.

Gee, a recent recipient of the American Association of University Women’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is a specialist in African dance techniques, Carribean dance forms, and Modern dance techniques. She teaches African and Modern dance classes at UNCG, and lectures in the Dance Appreciation and Dance History curricula. She has recently returned from a six month research assignment to Guinea, West Africa where she investigated the cultural traditions of the Malinke ethnic group.
