UNCG Looks at the American Presidency

GREENSBORO, NC – Three speakers coming to UNCG – including Theodore Sorensen, President John F. Kennedy’s speechwriter – will shed light on the presidency.

The “Looking at the American Presidency” speaker series is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by University Libraries, the Department of History and the Department of Political Science.

The speakers are:
• Dr. William C. Harris; 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4; Kirkland Room, Elliott University Center. Harris, professor emeritus of history at NC State, will speak about the elections of 1860 and 1864. He is the author of the book “Lincoln’s Rise to the Presidency,” which will be available for sale and signing after the lecture.

• Theodore Sorensen; 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29; Elliott University Center Auditorium. Sorenson was special counsel, adviser and speechwriter for Kennedy. Tickets to his lecture must be picked up in person from the UNCG Box Office, (336) 334-4849.

• Dr. Martha Kumar; 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15; Cone Ballroom B, Elliott University Center. Kumar, a political scientist at Towson University, will speak about her new book, “Managing the President’s Message: The White House Communications Operation.”

The series will include at least one more speaker: Dr. Vernon Burton, author of “The Age of Lincoln.” Burton, who will come to campus in the spring, is a professor of history and sociology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
