GREENSBORO, NC – For decades education has steadily diverged along two paths, creating a gulf between the sciences and the arts. Students are often pigeonholed as “math” or “artistic” types.
A conference sponsored by the NC A+ Schools Program at UNCG offers teachers ways to bridge the gap, integrating math into the arts curriculum and vice versa.
The two-day event, “Math, the Arts and Multiple Intelligences,” is slated for Thursday and Friday, Aug. 7 and 8, in Elliott University Center. Experiential workshops, panel discussions and performances will inspire teachers to communicate the math skills their students need to pass state achievement tests without ignoring the arts.
Attendees will be treated to a Thursday evening performance of “The Red Planet” by the Open Dream Ensemble. They will also explore the arts with artists and art educators as part of “Open Studio” night.
Early registration runs through June 30. Costs are:
• $80, UNCG faculty, staff and students and NC A-Plus Schools Network teachers, administrators and staff;
• $130, other teachers, administrators and artists; and
• (After June 30) $150, other teachers, administrators and artists.
Registration fees include a hot buffet lunch and boxed dinner on Thursday and a continental breakfast and snacks on Friday. Registration, hotel information and conference schedule are available online at http://aplus-schools.uncg.edu.
The NC A+ Schools Network consists of 42 schools from across the state. The program is housed at UNCG.
A+ encourages schools to use the arts to “re-form” their approach to “doing the business of schools.” While not discounting standards of achievement such as state test scores, A+ evaluators identify the contributions the arts make to students’ intellectual, social and emotional growth.
