GREENSBORO, N.C. -- How did the Jewish mystics understand and describe the role of women?
Dr. Ellen Haskell will discuss “Divine Domesticity: Women, Marriage and the Home in Jewish Mysticism” Tuesday, April 29.
Haskell, an assistant professor of religious studies at UNCG, will speak at 7:30 p.m. in Room 217, School of Music. Her presentation will mark the 8th in UNCG’s annual Henry Samuel Levinson Lecture Series.
The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
Haskell, a new faculty member, holds a PhD in the history of Judaism from the University of Chicago Divinity School. In her own words, “I am most interested in how Judaism describes the relationship between human beings and the divine. Each of these relationships provides new perspectives on how we understand not only God but also ourselves.”
The Levinson Lecture is sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies, the Jewish Studies Program, and the College of Arts and Sciences in conjunction with the Henry S. Levinson Program Endowment for Jewish Studies, the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professorship in Jewish Studies, the Barbara Colchamiro Jewish Studies Program Endowment, the Judith Rosenstock Hyman Jewish Studies Program Endowment and The Carolina Center for Jewish Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill.
