GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Michael Pollan’s eye-opening “Omnivore’s Dilemma” is the subject of the 2008 MALS READ, a free community program offered by the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program.

The program begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the Weatherspoon Art Museum Auditorium. Join in the discussion about one of life’s most profound daily pleasures — food.

As omnivores we can eat just about anything, resulting in poor health, obesity, standardized taste, loss of tillable land and increased use of pesticides and growth hormones. Pollan challenges us to think about the food we eat, where it comes from, what goes into it and what it is doing to us.

Dr. Charles Headington, who teaches humanities and sustainable living courses in the MALS program, will lead the discussion. Headington won the 2005 Thomas Berry Award, a national award for environmental teaching.

All participants should read “Omnivore's Dilemma,” which is available in local bookstores.
