GREENSBORO, NC – The potential that information technology holds for the growth of health care in the United States will be addressed by R. Timothy Rice, president and CEO of the Moses Cone Health System.

Rice will deliver the inaugural lecture at the McDowell Research Center for Global IT Management at the Bryan School.

The lecture, titled “IT in Healthcare? the Good, the Bad and the Potential,” will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, in Room 160 of the Bryan Building. The public is welcome at no cost. A reception will be held in Room 416 of the Bryan Building following the lecture.

“We are delighted to have Tim Rice, someone with a breadth and depth of experience in the fields of health care and information technology, to deliver the first-ever lecture at the McDowell Research Center for Global IT Management,” said Dr. Prashant Palvia, Joe Rosenthal Excellence Professor and director of the Center.

Rice was named president and CEO of the Moses Cone Health System in 2004; where he served as Chief Operating Officer from 2001 to 2004. Prior to 2001, he was Executive Vice President of Cone Hospital and Executive Vice President of the Health Services System. Rice has a Master of Health Administration from Duke and is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives. Rice serves on the UNCG Foundation and is the current board chair for the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and the Central Atlantic VHA Board.

Dedicated in 2007, the McDowell Research Center for Global IT Management at the Bryan School of Business and Economics is the nation’s first center to investigate the international applications of information technology. The Center is named for Microsoft Vice President Bob McDowell and his wife Lissa Shelley McDowell, a 1968 UNCG graduate. In 2006 the McDowells gave UNCG a $3.85 million gift to support global information technology, the Weatherspoon Art Museum and Communication Across the Curriculum, UNCG's signature program of cross-departmental academic excellence, student development and excellence in teaching.
