GREENSBORO, NC – The dance concert “Antithesis” will feature works choreographed by graduating and rising seniors at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 9-10, at Triad Yoga Institute, 1712 Spring Garden Street.

The event is the final product of an independent study in choreography and concert production by graduating dance student Rachel Grant.

Other contributing choreographers, all students in the Department of Dance, are Rachel Brown, Jacqueline Devine, Barbara Tait and Lauren Wilson. Tickets are $2 in advance, $3 at the door – cash only – and may be reserved by emailing Grant.

Brown’s work for the concert, set to music composed and played by recent UNCG graduate Paul Stern, is inspired by the Book of Ecclesiastes and reflects her interest in expressing religious thoughts through movement. Her presentation of the work is part of her honors project.

Grant’s dance, “this is the way the subject is,” draws movement inspiration from the highly kinetic tradition of Tibetan Buddhist monastic debate. Two duets occur simultaneously; the dancers engage in a physical argument, posing questions and defending theses through movement.

Jackie Devine’s untitled dance is also a quartet structured as two duets. Based on a movement study for a choreography assignment, Devine describes it as “a sad little piece.”

“Peace Tin,” choreographed by Barbara Tait, was inspired by questions dealing with patience and uncomfortable silence. The human mind tends to categorize information in order to be able to process it, but is this really necessary? This trio seeks to physically explore the “in between” stages of categorization in which an end result is neither necessary nor important.

Lauren Wilson’s piece, “First Impressions,” is a study in form and structure. A duet for women, the dance is set to music by Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma and Mark O’Connor.
