Theatre Season Will Open with ‘Big River’

GREENSBORO, NC – From the earthy social commentary of Mark Twain to the polished upper crust prose of Philip Barry, UNCG Theatre’s 2008-09 season has something for everyone.


The line-up kicks off Oct. 1, and includes:


Oct. 1-5 “Big River”
A musical version of Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn” with music and lyrics by the legendary Roger Miller. This funny and poignant production with a mesmerizing score will open the newly renovated Aycock Auditorium.

Oct. 31-Nov. 9 “Holiday”
Philip Barry’s classy romantic comedy about two wealthy sisters and a young man determined to live life to the fullest. Brown Building Auditorium.

• Nov. 2 and 9, 2 p.m.
• Nov. 4, 5 and 6, 7 p.m.
Nov. 14-23 “Revenger’s Tragedy”
Contemporary adaptation of Thomas Middleton’s Jacobean tale of violence, lust and ambition. Taylor Theatre.
• Nov. 14, 15, 21 and 22, 8 p.m.
• Nov. 16 and 23, 2 p.m.
• Nov. 18, 19 and 20, 7 p.m.
Jan. 28-Feb. 1 “Flannel Shorts”
Sophomore BFA class’ annual festival of original 10-minute plays.
• Jan. 28 and 29, 7 p.m.
• Jan. 30 and 31, 8 p.m.
• Feb. 1, 2 p.m.
Feb. 3-8 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Region IV
UNCG Theatre will host 1,000 college and university theatre students and educators for the annual gathering.
Feb. 24-March 1 “Home on the Mornin’ Train”
Written by Kim Hines for grades six and up. Presented by the North Carolina Theatre for Young People (NCTYP) in Taylor Theatre. The story of the Underground Railroad is juxtaposed with the story of Jewish children escaping the Holocaust.

March 24-29 “Go, Dog. Go!”
NCTYP touring production. Based on the book by P. D. Eastman, and adapted for the stage by Steven Dietz and Allison Gregory. Music by Michael Koerner. Taylor Theatre.

• March 27 and 28, 8 p.m.
• March 28 and 29, 2 p.m.
April 2-5 “Picnic”
Opera based on William Inge’s classic drama and commissioned by the UNCG School of Music. Aycock Auditorium.
• April 2 and 3, 7:30 p.m.
• April 5, 2 p.m.
April 17-May 2 “Lysistrata”
Adapted from the play by Aristophanes. The women of Athens unite in a sex strike.
• April 17 and 18 and May 2, 8 p.m.
• April 19, 2 p.m.
• April 28 and 30, 7 p.m.
April 24-May 3 “The Clean House”

Repertory production of Sarah Ruhl’s touching, Pulitzer Prize-nominated comedy about four women grappling with order, cleanliness and life’s messy ambiguities. Brown Building Auditorium.
• April 24 and 25 and May 1, 8 p.m.
• April 26 and May 3, 2 p.m.
• April 29, 7 p.m.


Tickets for non-musical plays are $12 for adults; $10 for students, senior citizens and children; $8 for groups of 10 or more and UNCG Alumni Association members; and $7 for current UNCG students.


Tickets for musicals are $15 for adults; $12 for seniors, students and children; $9 for groups of 10 or more and UNCG Alumni Association members; and $7 for UNCG students.


Weekday school matinee performances of the NCTYP productions are $7 for adults and UNCG students; $6 for children, students and senior citizens; and $5 for groups of 10 or more.
