GREENSBORO, NC – The International and Global Studies (IGS) Program is going over the moon.
IGS will host an Asian Autumn Moon Festival Saturday, Sept. 13, to celebrate the new Asian Studies major.
The festival, held in partnership with Greensboro Asian community and UNCG Asian student groups, will run from noon until 3 p.m. in the Jaylee M. Mead Auditorium of the Patricia A. Sullivan Science Building. Admission is free.
Parking is available in the adjacent McIver St. parking deck, accessible from the Market Street entrance.
Enjoy light refreshments, including Moon Cakes, and entertainment. UNCG faculty will also provide cultural lectures.
As a prelude to the festival, Dr. P.P. Karan will lead a lecture-discussion titled “Japan in the 21st Century” Friday, Sept.12, from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Alexander Room, Elliott University Center. Karan, a faculty member at the University of Kentucky, is a specialist in problems of environment, development and social change in non-Western cultures. He chairs the UK Japanese Studies Committee, is a charter member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and serves as development planning and environmental management consultant to governments and international agencies in the Asia-Pacific region.
Parking for Karan’s lecture is available at the Walker Street deck.
The Asian Studies major within the Regional Studies Concentration of IGS began in the fall semester. It is designed for undergraduates interested in interdisciplinary study of the vast regions of East, Southeast and South Asia.
Asian Studies is a 30-semester hour major requiring six hours of course work in an Asian language and six hours of IGS core courses. Students must also complete 18 hours of course work on international and/or global topics, at least 12 of which must deal principally with Asia.
