GREENSBORO, N.C. – Tenor René Barbera, winner of the 2007 Charles A. Lynam Vocal Competition, will perform Saturday, Sept. 13, at UNCG's Aycock Auditorium as part of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra’s season opening “Century Celebration Gala.”

The event, which begins at 7 p.m., features virtuoso and Grammy-winning pianist Yefim Bronfman in concert with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. Dmitry Sitkovetsky, the Symphony’s music director, will conduct. A reception at the Weatherspoon Art Museum follows the concert.

The concert features familiar operatic selections by Donizetti, Verdi and Tchaikovsky.

In addition to earning top honors in the Lynam Competition, Barbera was a finalist in the 2008 Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions.

The Lynam Competition is an annual event that draws aspiring vocalists to UNCG’s School of Music from around the world. It honors the teaching and performing career of Professor Charles Lynam, who received a UNCG Alumni Teaching Excellence Award and was named Teacher of the Year in the School of Music. Lynam retired from UNCG in 2006 after 41 years.

This year’s Lynam Competition will take place Oct. 25-26.

Built in 1926, Aycock Auditorium underwent a $19 million renovation beginning in 2006. Improvements included new seating, enlarged lobby, construction of an orchestra pit, new sound and electrical systems, better sight lines, upgraded plumbing and HVAC systems, additional restrooms and new interior decor.

Concert tickets are $50, $30 and $10 for students with ID. Advance tickets are available at Elliott University Center Box Office, www.uncg.edu/euc/boxoffice/tickets/ or through the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra by calling (336) 335-5456, extension 223 and at ticketmaster.com. A limited number of tickets will be available at Aycock Auditorium the night of the show. Gala tickets, which include premium concert tickets, valet parking and cocktail reception, are $110 and are available only through the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.
