Jason Alston, the first Post-MLS Diversity Resident in UNCG University Libraries.
GREENSBORO, NC – Jason Alston, who earned his Master of Library Science degree from NC Central in May, has become the first Post-MLS Diversity Resident in UNCG University Libraries.
During the two-year residency, which he began in July, Alston will explore all aspects of academic librarianship, participate in the university’s diversity initiatives, and collaborate with the Library and Information Studies Program to develop new diversity programs. The residency program was established to increase the diversity of University Libraries’ professional staff and to foster the growth and development of a new librarian.
While pursuing his master’s degree, Alston interned at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library in Henderson and completed a research project entitled “Factors Affecting Young African Americans’ Decisions to Enter Library School.” He was named a Diversity Scholar by both the Association of Research Libraries and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Alston, who grew up in the Soul City neighborhood of Norlina, was a reporter and columnist for the Henderson Daily Dispatch before starting the master’s program at NC Central. He received a bachelor’s degree in English from UNC Wilmington in 2005.
