GREENSBORO, NC – Award-winning Cuban-American children’s book author and storyteller Carmen Agra Deedy has been traveling the world for almost 20 years.

At 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, she’ll stop at UNCG and tell a few of her stories. The event in Elliott University Center Auditorium is free and open to the public.

Born in Cuba before emigrating to the U.S. and growing up in Decatur, Ga., Deedy has developed a devoted following among storytelling aficionados, and her books for children are winning numerous awards. The latest, “Martina the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale,” is a Pura Belpré Honor Book. The Pura Belpré Awards recognize the best books for children and youths that celebrate the Latino cultural experience.

Deedy’s visit is made possible through the cooperation of the School of Education, the University Libraries, the Teaching Resources Center, the Library and Information Studies Department’s Cora Paul Bomar Fund, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and the Center for Creative Writing in the Arts (all at UNCG) and Bookmarks: The Triad’s Festival of Books.

Campus visitors can park in any university parking deck for $1 an hour. The Walker Avenue deck, at Walker Avenue and Stirling Street, is closest to Elliott University Center. EUC faces Stirling Street and the Walker Avenue deck. Campus maps are available at www.uncg.edu/online_map/.

The preceding Saturday, Sept. 13, Deedy will appear at the Bookmarks Festival in Winston-Salem, where her appearance will be sponsored by the UNCG School of Education. BOOKMARKS: The Triad’s Festival of Books, is a free event with the goal of providing a positive experience with books for people of all ages. Past festivals have drawn as many as 7,500 attendees.
