GREENSBORO, NC – Pay a visit to “The Country Wife” without leaving the city.
Theatre offers William Wycherley’s Restoration-era comedy Friday, Feb. 22, to Sunday, March 2, in Taylor Theatre.
“Wife” centers on Mr. Horner, a rake who returns to elite London society from France and feigns impotence. Horner plans to seduce his friends’ wives.
Horner’s antics, coupled with the men’s jealousies and the wives’ hidden desires, create a hilarious mix of innuendo, pride and honor.
Director Jim Wren, a theatre professor at UNCG, says today’s TV comedies owe much to Restoration plays like this one, written in the 1670’s. “Characters ring as true today as they did in the 17th century.”
Wren says the “high style” of the play was the greatest challenge for him as a director. “Our production highlights the comedy and sexuality inherent in the play.”
Show times are: Feb. 22, 23, 29 and March 1 at 8 p.m.; Feb. 24 and March 2 at 2 p.m.; Feb. 26, 27 and 28 at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $12 for adults; $10 for students, senior citizens and children; $8 for groups of 10 or more and UNCG Alumni Association members; and $7 for current UNCG students.
