GREENSBORO, N.C. –The Department of Mathematics and Statistics now offers a doctorate in computational mathematics. The first students are to start the program in the fall of 2008.
UNCG is the first school in North Carolina to offer a stand-alone PhD in this field.
The program will provide students with an understanding of computational methods and technologies that can be applied to solving fundamental as well as real-world problems. The doctorate will prepare graduates to serve as leaders in mathematical research in education, academia, industry and government.
“The new program provides an excellent opportunity for continuing education at the doctoral level,” said Dr. Alex Chigogidze, the H. Barton Excellence Professor and head of the UNCG department of Mathematics and Statistics. “Computational mathematics incorporates powerful computational methods as well as classical mathematical ideas and as such should be attractive to a broad spectrum of prospective students.”
Chigogidze predicts four to five doctoral students will enroll during the first year.
The department currently offers a master of arts degree with concentrations in applied mathematics, applied statistics and pure mathematics. The department also offers a doctoral minor in statistics and a post-baccalaureate certificate in statistics.
In particular, the degree will help meet the demand in North Carolina for PhD graduates in computational mathematics, a field that is rapidly expanding.
Computational mathematics is UNCG’s 25th doctoral program.
