GREENSBORO, N.C. – Some of the most outstanding young musicians from the Southeast will gather at the School of Music for three days of intense music training Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 14-16, during the annual Carolina Band Festival and Conductors Conference.

This year’s event, the 19th edition, will culminate in two concerts. The UNCG Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, and the two Honor Bands will perform at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 16. Both events will take place in Cone Ballroom, Elliott University Center and are open to the public at no charge.

The grades 9-10 Concert Honor Band will be led by Dr. Brian Doyle, director of bands at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. The Grades 11-12 Symphonic Honor Band will be lead by Professor Don Wilcox, director of bands emeritus at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia.

175 students from five states are expected to participate. More than 300 applications and recordings were received this year for seats in either the 87-member Honor Band or the 88-member Symphonic Band.

During the Band Festival, close to 50 music teachers from a five-state area will participate in the Carolina Conductors Conference and will receive instruction and critique under the guidance of guest clinician Professor Richard Clary, wind ensemble conductor, at Florida State University. Additional lectures and presentations will be led by UNCG music faculty.

Dr. John R. Locke, professor of music and founding director of the UNCG Summer Music Camp, and Dr. Kevin Geraldi, associate director of bands at UNCG will also make presentations on a variety of topics related to conducting and rehearsing.
