UNC President Erskine Bowles gives the charge to the Chancellor Search Committee on Jan. 4.
GREENSBORO, NC – Stephen C. Hassenfelt, the chair of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Board of Trustees, is leading the chancellor search committee to find a successor to Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan.
Hassenfelt convened the first meeting of the 18-member committee, which has trustee, student, faculty, staff, alumni and community representation, on Friday, Jan. 4.
(Update 1-11-08) - Public forums have been scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 23 and 24, for members of the UNCG community and the public to share the characteristics they hope to see in the next chancellor. The forums will be held in the UNCG School of Music, located at the intersection of West Market and McIver streets. Free parking will be in the McIver Street Deck. Times and locations are:
Erskine Bowles, president of the 16-campus University of North Carolina, gave the committee its charge, and he had words of praise for Chancellor Sullivan.
“I can’t start the charge without saying something about Pat Sullivan,” Bowles said. “She is not only a nationally known leader in higher education, but what I have found most remarkable about her is you can always tell that the kids who go here are her top priority – and they know it. If you look at what’s been accomplished here in the last 13 years, as a native of Greensboro, it takes my breath away.”
Bowles went on to state, “This is by far the most important job you will do for this institution, bar none. It will be important not only for UNCG, but for the Triad.”
He told the committee that he wants to receive three finalists, unranked, and will make a slection to present to the UNC Board of Governors at the June meeting. Among the characteristics he said the committee should seek are leadership; administrative and fundraising abilities; a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education as well as to the campus research component; passion; people skills; a desire to be a partner within the UNC system and with N.C. A&T Chancellor Stanley Battle.
The committee got off to a fast start in the New Year, less than a month after Chancellor Patricia Sullivan announced her retirement on Dec. 6.
Hassenfelt said the committee will conduct a national search. Search firms were interviewed on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Chancellor's Board Room in Mossman Building on campus. The sessions were open to the public.
A university web site, chancellorsearch.uncg.edu, is available and features updates on the chancellor search process and allows comments to be emailed to the committee.
“Being involved in the selection process, this committee has the opportunity to find a great leader for a great institution,” Hassenfelt said. “With her retirement, our job now is to listen to our constituencies, determine the leadership qualities that everyone desires in a new chancellor, find the best candidates possible and match them up with the needs of our university going forward. It is not an easy job.”
Sullivan, UNCG’s ninth chancellor, will leave the chancellor’s post on July 31, 2008. She will take a research leave and return as a professor. She began the job on Jan. 1, 1995.
The search committee eventually will recommend finalists to the full Board of Trustees, who will vote on recommending finalists to Bowles, Hassenfelt said. Then Bowles will recommend one candidate to the UNC Board of Governors, which elects the new chancellor. In addition to Sullivan’s successor, the university system will hire new chancellors for UNC-Chapel Hill and for Fayetteville State University this year.
