GREENSBORO, N.C. – Students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to participate in Focus the Nation, a teach-in that is billed as the largest teach-in U.S. history.

The event, which is expected to take place simultaneously on more than 1,000 college and university campuses in all 50 states, will be held Monday, Jan. 28 through Thursday, Jan. 31, in Elliott University Center.

Focus the Nation will kick off the night of Wednesday, Jan. 30, with a web cast of “2% Solution,” co-produced by the National Wildlife Federation and aired by the Earth Day Network. Virtual panelists will include Stanford climate scientist Steve Schneider.

In-person presentations by faculty members from across the disciplines and staff members from across the university will take place on Thursday, Jan. 31. Among the topics are: “Does Business Make the World Go Round?” and “Sustainability and Permaculture.”

Dora Nelson, the keynote speaker, will discuss changes in the Arctic. Dr. A. Edward Uprichard, UNCG provost emeritus, will introduce members of an afternoon panel who address topics pertinent to North Carolina residents such as mountain top removal to extract coal.

Landfill on the Lawn, a demonstration of how much trash can be recycled, will take place in front of the Stone Building on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Students, faculty, staff and community participants will be encouraged to vote on what they think are the top five solutions from a list that will be available beginning Monday, Jan. 21, at www.focusthenation.org. All students who vote will be eligible to win a $10,000 leadership scholarship for a project to be completed by August 2008.

“We are thrilled to be part of this initiative,” said Dr. Anna Marshall-Baker, coordinator of the center for sustainability at UNCG. “It represents the enormous power that students and the public have when they use their education to create positive change in the world.”

All events are free and open to the public. All events have been coordinated by members of the University Committee on Sustainability.
