Composition, Theory and History Lecture

Series Continues at School of Music

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The year-long Composition, Theory and History Division lecture series at the School of Music resumes Wednesday, Jan. 30, with a lecture by Dr. Annegret Fauser of UNC Chapel Hill.

Titled “Fighting with Scores: American Musicians during World War II,” the lecture covers the role of composers such as Benjamin Barber and Aaron Copeland in the war, along with musical work of the Office of War Information and the State Department in the genesis of works such as Marc Blitzstein’s Airborne Symphony.

All lectures will be held at 4 p.m. in Collins Lecture Hall at the School of Music and are free and open to the public. UNCG students may attend one CHT lecture for recital credit.

Other lectures are:

• Thursday, Jan. 24: “Wordless Dramas: Character and Action in the Music of Thea Musgrave and Harrison Birtwistle.” Lecture by Philip Rupprecht, Duke University.
• Wednesday, Feb. 6: “Dramatic Oppositions and their Musical Voices in ‘Guys and Dolls.’” Lecture by Dr. Michael Buchler, Florida State University.
• Thursday, Feb. 28: “Understanding Style and Genre: Tango, Piazzolla and the CD Bin.” Lecture by Alejandro Rutty, UNCG School of Music.
• Thursday, March 27: “Academies of Scratch.” Lecture by Mark Katz, UNC Chapel Hill.
