GREENSBORO, NC - Middle and high school students will converge on The University of North Carolina at Greensboro for the regional competition of the N.C. Science Olympiad Feb. 23.
The competition will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. inside the Science Building, Elliott University Center and the Health and Human Performance Building, as well as the lawn outside the university center.
At least 40 teams from at least 24 different middle and high schools will participate in the event. In past years the Science Olympiad has attracted roughly 400 students, parents and teachers from Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Davidson, Forsythe, Guilford, Orange, Person, Randolph, Rockingham and Stokes counties.
Dr. Robert Muir, UNCG professor emeritus of physics and astronomy, said, “The Science Olympiad provides students that have an interest in science an opportunity to compete and to receive recognition of their achievements. It is a nice counterpoint to athletic competition and recognition.”
The top performers in this regional tournament will compete in the state tournament held at North Carolina State University April 4-5. The top two middle and high school teams at the state tournament will go on to the 2008 National Tournament.
