UNCG Announces 2008-09 Merit Scholars

GREENSBORO, NC – UNCG is providing more than $883,000 in merit scholarships, including awards to 36 new freshmen, for the 2008-09 academic year as part of the university’s Merit Scholarship program.

The Merit Awards Program recognizes and encourages exceptional academic ability and talent. All of the awards are renewable for three additional years of study. New scholarships are being created through the UNCG Students First Campaign, which is seeking to raise more than $68 million for scholarships as part of its $100 million goal.

This year’s merit scholars are:

Butler Scholarship
The Butler Centennial Scholarship is valued annually at $10,500 for in-state students, for a total value of $42,000 over four years. The Butler Fund was created by the late Ethel Virginia Butler, who managed the UNCG Bookstore from 1945 until her retirement in 1974.
This year’s recipients are:

  • Philip T. Wingfield, 610 Franklin St., Roanoke Rapids, Roanoke Rapids High School.
  • Luke R. Dixon, 3430 Oakway Court, Kernersville, East Forsyth High School.
  • Peyton H. Ford, 4623 James Crossing Drive, Jamestown, Southwest Guilford High School.
  • Amanda L. Headley, # 25 Buller Street Woodbrook, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Bishop Anstey High School.
  • Sarah E. Moore, 1707 Elon Ossipee Road, Elon, Western Alamance High School.

Felton-Marble Scholarship
The Marguerite Felton and Guita Marble Scholarship in Chemistry is valued at $6,000, for a total value of $24,000. The fund was established by Ann Hunt, a graduate of the class of 1965, to honor two chemistry professors who influenced Hunt while she was a student at UNCG.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Elizabeth A. Lawson, 614 Stokes Forest Drive, King, West Stokes High School.

Fisher Scholarship
The Marion White Fisher Scholarship is valued at $6,000. The awards were made possible by a bequest of Freida White McGirt in memory of her daughter, Dr. Marion White Fisher, Class of 1939. The scholarship is valued at a total of $24,000.
This year’s recipients are:

  • Shawn N. Mendez, 8505 Cedar Hollow Lane, Huntersville, Hopewell High School.
  • Gordon D. Black, 1323 Goodwin Ave., Charlotte, East Mecklenburg High School.

Class of 1944 Scholarship
The Class of 1944 Scholarship is valued at $2,500, with a total value of $10,000.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Evan B. Stevens, 6207 Gail Drive, Indian Trail, Porter Ridge High School.

McNair Scholarship
The Martha Fowler McNair Merit Scholarship is valued at $5,000, with a total of $20,000.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Margaret C. Spellman, 4 Woodcrest Road, Asheville, Asheville High School.

Board of Visitors Chancellor’s Scholarship
The Board of Visitors Chancellor’s Scholarship is valued at $6,000 with a total value of $24,000.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Joseph L. Arno, 200 Rothbury Drive, Whispering Pines, Union Pines High School.

Bank of America Scholarship
Bank of America Scholarship is valued at $7,000, with a total value of $28,000.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Brooke N. Strider, 803 Seven Lakes North, West End, North Moore High School.

Libby Jones Scholarship
The Elizabeth Louisa “Libby” Jones Scholarship is valued at $3,500, with a total value of $14,000. It was established as a memorial to the late Elizabeth Louisa Jones in 1988 by her parents, Charles J. Jones and Elizabeth Godbey Jones of Garner, and other family members, friends and IBM coworkers. A 1973 graduate of UNCG, Jones was a mathematics major who graduated magna cum laude and was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Jacob C. Bowman, 5606 Richland Street, Greensboro, Western Guilford High School.

Ferguson Scholarship
The James S. and Frances C. Ferguson Scholarship is valued at $6,000, with a total value of $24,000. The Ferguson Fund was started in 1978 to honor the late Dr. and Mrs. James S. Ferguson for their years of service to the university. Ferguson was UNCG chancellor for nearly 14 years, between 1964 and 1979.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Alexandra L. Creola, 43 Hyalite Road West, Dahlonega, Ga., Lumpkin County High School.

Sloan Scholarship
The Harry B. and Edith V. Sloan Memorial Scholarship is valued at $2,500, with a total value of $10,000. The award was endowed in 1997 for students interested in pursuing study in health, the sciences or the mathematical sciences. It was created through a bequest from the late Edith V. Sloan of Greensboro, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences from 1966-83 and an alumna of UNCG. The scholarship also bears the name of her late husband, Harry B. Sloan.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Emily N. Williams, 103 Shannon Ridge Court, Louisburg, Louisburg High School.

Eiserer Scholarship
The Carol Jean Eiserer Memorial Scholarship is valued at $10,500, for a total value of $42,000. It was established in June 1986, in memory of Carol Jean Eiserer by her parents, Leonard A. C. Eiserer and Lorraine E. Eiserer. Carol Jean Eiserer graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education from Woman’s College in 1964. For 22 years she was a loyal contributor to the Alumni Annual Giving Campaign of the University.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Karesa R. Edwards, 30 Hawlings Court, Brookeville, Md., The Barrie School.

Reynolds Scholarship
Katharine Smith Reynolds Scholarships are valued at $8,000, for a total value of $32,000. Reynolds Scholarships have been awarded at UNCG since 1963.
This year’s recipients are:

  • Hannah K. Lomas, 8400 Fiddlestick Way, Wilmington, John T. Hoggard High School.
  • Rachel H. Young, 3233 Colvard Parkway, Charlotte, N.C. School of Science and Mathematics.
  • Alexandria F. Harkey, 10710 Bowman Barrier Road, Mount Pleasant, Mount Pleasant High School.
  • Kelley S. Carter, 1344 Foster Road, Grimesland, D.H. Conley High School.
  • Christina M. Murphy, 140 Lattimore Road, Eden, John Motley Morehead High School.
  • Meghan D. Bridges, 2 Amber Knoll Court, Weaverville, North Buncombe High School.

Jefferson-Pilot Scholarship
The Jefferson-Pilot Scholarships are valued at $5,000, for a total value of $20,000. The Jefferson-Pilot Scholarship Program was established in 1983 by the former Jefferson-Pilot Corporation, which is now Lincoln Financial Inc.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Joseph R. Dickey, 2608 Rosalind Ave., Roanoke, Va., Patrick Henry High School.

Mead Scholarship
The Jaylee Montague Mead Scholarship is valued at $5,000, for a total value of $20,000. It is awarded to incoming students majoring in any field within the College of Arts & Sciences.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Nicholson H. Sprinkle, 5015 Wilkesboro Highway, Statesville, North Iredell High School.

Class of 1955 Scholarship
The Class of 1955 Merit Scholarship is valued at $5,000, for a total value of $20,000. It is made available through gifts from the class of 1955.

This year's recipient is:

  • Peter R. DelGobbo, 3001 Stanford Drive, Durham, C.E. Jordan High School.

Alumni Award
The Alumni Award has a total value of up to $18,000. The scholarships are funded by contributions from alumni and friends of the institution through the University's Annual Program. This year’s recipients are:
$4,500 per year

  • Samantha R. Bradley, P.O. Box 503, Gibsonville, The Early College at Guilford.
  • Miranda V. Bradley, P.O. Box 503, Gibsonville, The Early College at Guilford.

$4,000 per year

  • Kelsey J. Maher, 145 Partridge Trail, Salisbury, Gray Stone Day School.
  • Erin J. Morrison, 4808 Donvic Drive, Greensboro, Northwest Guilford High School.

Bryan Scholarship
The Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Scholarships are valued at $6,000 per year, with a total value of $24,000. The scholarships were created in 1983 by the Greensboro couple when they established the Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Endowment Fund to provide assistance for undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Business and Economics at UNCG. In 1987, the UNCG Board of Trustees named the school in his honor.
Recipients this year are:

  • Samantha R. Bradley, P.O. Box 503, Gibsonville, The Early College at Guilford.
  • Miranda V. Bradley, P.O. Box 503, Gibsonville, The Early College at Guilford.
  • Morgan V. Callicutt, 524 Herbie Road, Carthage, North Moore High School.
  • Maria Lao, 1910 Midwood Drive, Albemarle, Albemarle High School.
  • Sara C. Paschal, 369 County Line Road, Reidsville, Reidsville High School.

Woman’s College Class of 1951 Scholarship
The Woman’s College Class of 1951 Scholarship is valued at $4,000, for a total value of $16,000. It was started as a reunion gift of the UNCG Class of 1951.
Recipients this year are:

  • Robin E. Tynes, 124 Valley Drive, Black Mountain, Asheville High School.
  • Amy L. Kemp, 3101 Braddock Drive, Raleigh, William G. Enloe High School.

Donoho Scholarship
The May Mebane Donoho Scholarship is valued at $3,000, for a total value of $12,000. The Donoho fund was established through a bequest from the estate of May M. Donoho, class of 1930. She majored in history at the North Carolina College for Women (now UNCG) and later taught history and French in high schools in the state, then spent 20 years with the N.C. Employment Security Commission.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Katherine R. Cranfill, 5929 Kenton Drive, Kernersville, East Forsyth High School.

Preyer Scholarship
The L. Richardson and Emily Preyer Scholarship is valued at $3,000, for a total value of $12,000. Established in 1991, the Preyer Scholarships are named for a Greensboro couple who were known for their extensive public service. A former Superior Court Judge and federal court judge, Preyer represented North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 12 years. Emily Preyer was a 1939 graduate of Woman’s College (now UNCG) who was involved in educational and civic affairs for many years.
This year’s recipient is:

  • Haley R. Marsh, 8305 Maude Stewart Road, Fuquay-Varina, Fuquay-Varina High School.
