GREENSBORO, NC – Ralph Bowen and Joey Calderazzo, two contemporary jazz standouts, will be the featured performers at the third annual Miles Davis Jazz Festival at the School of Music.
The concert will take place on Sunday, April 6, at 3:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
The UNCG Jazz Ensemble will perform Duke Ellington’s legendary “Queen Suite.” The work was inspired by Ellington’s private audience with Britain’s Queen Elizabeth in 1957. The work was not made public until 1970.
Saxophonist, composer and arranger Ralph Bowen has been a fixture on the New York jazz for more than two decades. His discography includes more than 50 titles and includes collaborations with Orrin Evans, Michel Camilo and Horace Silver. Bowen is an associate professor of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. Bowen is known for bringing casual perfectionism to clubs, concert halls and festivals worldwide.
Joey Calderazzo has built a reputation as one of the most ferocious and commanding pianists of the new jazz generation. Raised on rock and roll, Calderazzo switched to jazz after listening to Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. Calderazzo has performed as a member of the Brandford Marsalis Quartet as well as a solo pianist.
The UNCG Jazz Ensemble is the flagship of the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program. Comprised of undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in making jazz a major part of the musical training, the ensemble has been featured in concerts throughout the U.S. and on radio and television.
The festival is sponsored by Tom Chitty and Associates/Prudential Carolinas Realty, Tate Street Coffee House and the UNCG School of Music.
