Raul Herrera
GREENSBORO, NC – Pianist Raúl Herrera, known for his interpretations of Mexican piano music from the turn of the 20th century, will deliver a performace and and lecture at the School of Music.
The event, titled “Piano Music from Porfirian Mexico (1880-1910)," will take place on Thursday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall. The public is welcome at no charge.
Herrera will perform works by noted Mexican composers, including Felipe Villanueva and Ernesto Elorduy as well as lecture on the importance of piano music from the era of Porfirio Diaz, Mexico’s president during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Stemming from European dance forms such as waltzes, polkas and mazurkas, Mexican music from that era is noted for its expressive content that may surprise 21st-century audiences. By combining performance with family recollections and commentary on the era, composers and music, Herrera revives a significant repertoire and shares with audiences the soul of this neglected aspect of Mexican heritage.
Herrera completed piano studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and at the Cleveland Institute of Music. From 1985 to 2000 he served as director general of music at UNAM. Herrera serves on the advisory board of the Chamber Orchestra of Baja California, the Camerata de Coahuila and the Mexico-Israel Cultural Institute.
The event is sponsored by the School of Music, the Lloyd International Honors College and the Department of Romance Languages.
