GREENSBORO, NC – Author and former veteran National Public Radio international correspondent Sarah Chayes, who now works in Afghanistan as field director for Afghans for Civil Society, will speak on Tuesday, April 8.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Room 160 of the Bryan Building
Chayes will deliver a lecture titled “Soap Factory in a Shooting Gallery or How to Build and Expand a Business in South Afghanistan.” Chayes will sign copies of her book “The Punishment of Virtue: Inside Afghanistan After the Taliban” following the lecture.
While at NPR, Chayes reported on the Kosovo crises, which earned her the 1999 Foreign Press Club and Sigma Delta Chi Awards. She also reported from Algeria, Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Serbia and Bosnia as well as covering the International War Crimes Tribunal and the European Union.
Chayes graduated from Harvard where she received the Radcliffe College History Prize. She served in the Peace Corps in Morocco and returned to Harvard to earn a master’s degree in History and Middle Eastern Studies.
Based in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2005 Chayes established the Arghand Cooperative, a venture that encourages local farmers to produce flowers, fruits and herbs instead of opium poppies.
The lecture is sponsored by the BELL (Building Entrepreneurial Learning for Life) Initiative, a university-wide program to expose students to the world of starting and operating businesses in fields from the arts to technology.
